Ever gotten a note from someone at just the right time and it encouraged you and made your day brighter? Yea well, this is not that. Well I mean it is if you’re spirits are lifted by a wacky sense of humor. Because I have plenty of that and use it often in my “note game”. Let me explain.
I have always been a note writer. I guess that makes sense given the fact that I’m writing to you here. But ever since I was a little girl, I have written notes and left them in random places for people. I get a lot of joy out of hearing a reaction or just knowing my voice was heard in their head long after I’d left. I have done this to my parents, Eric’s family, and our kids. Even random people as I’ve been known to leave hilarious memes in public bathrooms. And if I’m in the stall next to you when you bust out laughing at one of my memes… well…day made. What can I say? I like to spread joy. I may also be messed up in the head, but let’s go with the former.
Recently my sticky note game reached a whole new level when daughter Alaine decided to play. Prior to leaving town last week, she saturated her home with notes for me since I was coming over to care for her golden retriever, Lakeland. She knows my love language! When I arrived on day one, I instantly saw pink sticky notes on the wall, floor, ceiling (overachiever) and various objects. Excited to see what she said, I ran around the house completely forgetting my real purpose for being there. The best part was finding them in places when I wasn’t looking for them like when I bent down to hook the dog’s leash. As I turned my head, I saw one UNDER the countertop. Clever. She gets it from her mom.

It was also funny when she ran out of things to say and just put blank sticky notes on things. At first I thought she used invisible ink. Ahhhh. Smart! After holding it to the light, putting it in the freezer and splashing it with water, I discovered there was no secret message. Shucks. It still made me try regardless. Well played. But now, the master was getting to work.
I attacked every blasted surface of her place with sticky notes – from her shoes to her pillow. I laughed myself silly as I commenced writing funny things on bright pink notes. The more I did, the more I thought of. Game on little girl. I even plastered her patio door with a nice greeting. Welcome home.

When I write notes like this, it’s because I want to make someone smile. I want them to think of me while knowing I was thinking of them. There may be a laugh in it or maybe words of encouragement. On a rare occasion there may be wisdom in it. (very rarely!) Maybe the note lives on in their desk drawer for a chuckle later on. Maybe they use it for a bookmark. Maybe they put it in the kitchen cabinet so they see it when they need a smile while fixing dinner. Sure, it’s just a sticky note, but the words and meaning behind it are much more. I currently have a blue sticky note in my car that Eric wrote me months ago. Every day it makes me smile.
Words are powerful. When I think about the Word of God, I think about how much He wanted us to have instruction, wisdom, encouragement and joy. I think about how saving these words and re-reading them on tough days can give us exactly what we need at that time. I think about how verses I learned in Sunday school or verses I helped my kids learn when they were young can be shared with a friend at the moment they really need them – especially the ones we had to make little tunes out of to remember! I think about the verses I tape up on my mirror or in the cabinet or on my desk and know that while my words may be cute or funny, His Word is more powerful than a two-edged sword. His Word gives life and meaning and hope. His Word never returns void. One Word from Him can change everything. A word from scripture can be the one thing a person needs most on that given day.
Go ahead grab a sticky note. Jot down a verse and put it somewhere you’ll see it. While you’re at it, write a note for someone else. Let’s invade the world with words on sticky notes! How fun will this be?! Let the games begin.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you; keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
Proverbs 7:1-3
