When Acorns Attack

Oh. those acorns. I had no idea. Good Lord a livin’ these things will kill you. And we have been under attack for weeks now.

First, let me back up. Like so many others, I’ve been working from home since March. Over these past 7 months of being in the house nearly 24/7, I’ve noticed a lot of things about our lovely abode. First, I discovered that we waste a lot of drawer and cabinet space. I have begun to remedy that thanks to binge watching “The Home Edit” on Netflix (highly recommend). I also noticed that we chose all the wrong paint colors for the walls and only Sherwin Williams Amazing Gray would work. Weekend paint projects commenced. WHile painting, I declared that we have neglected the front porch for too long and that needed new paint, new door, new rockers, and new accessories. (My husband loves me.) You can see that we have been busy. All in all, we have completed about 26 different home improvement projects since we went into Covid-19 lockdown mode. So as we are in this “rediscovery of our home phase”, we came face to face (literally) with something we didn’t know we had. ATTACK ACORN TREES.

OMG. You think I’m kidding, exaggerating, etc. I assure you. This is our reality. If you don’t believe me, walk up our front sidewalk. The poor UPS guy got hit in the next the other day and he nearly dropped my package. It looked like a scene straight from the movie Ace Ventura Pet Detective. (You know the one in the beginning where he throws the package around? I love that movie!)

The first time I heard it, I jumped out of my desk chair. I don’t know where I was going but I knew I had to get away from the windows. Don’t give me too much credit for my defensive strategies though. The very next time I heard the mortar shells hit the tin roof, I raced out the front door to determine who was attacking us. Yes, I went to the gunfire. I would make one heck of a buddy in the bunker.

Standing on the porch, I heard it again. It was so loud. It was unbelievable. I’m thinking, “We have lived here for 17 years. How could I not have heard this before?” Well it seems it only happens M-F from 9am – 5pm. No I don’t know why. But I do know that if you step outside or venture into our yard you will get hit. And they hurt. Forget alarm systems and cameras. Just get you some of these trees and a tin roof.

And if you are heading to visit us any time soon, wear a helmet. You’ve been warned.
