Cotillion, Cold Meds & a Goat

Riding to school with three of our four children was always eventful and this particular morning was no different. Our teenage daughter was explaining her difficulties with waking up due to the large doses of cold medicine she received from her father the night before.

“You know your father should not dish out the cold meds. What did he give you?” I dared to ask.

“A couple blue pills, a white one, some nasty liquid stuff….”

Oh my. I didn’t have a chance to consider the impact of our daughter being severely overmedicated before another question was hurled my way.

“Mom, I need a new dress for cotillion. I have worn everything I have already.”

I decided to turn this into a learning opportunity for my eleven-year-old daughter and reminded her of the children without shoes or food. As if on cue, my son chimed in. He was determined to get his plea in between breaths by the girls.

“Mom, can we buy a new house?” No wonder I’m tired by the time I get to work in the mornings.

“Son, our house is fine. Why on Earth would you think we need another one?”

“Because I want a goat.”

Of course he does.

No matter how many times I find myself in these hilarious episodes, I am always surprised by the randomness of it all. And you just have to laugh and be thankful that one day, this story will come in handy. Its days like this that I fall completely on Proverbs 31. In order to have the patience and endurance to be a Godly wife and mother, we sometimes have to take a deep breath and speak the Word. And if that doesn’t work, just buy ear plugs and smile.

She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness. She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness.  Proverbs 31: 25-27  (NLT)
